BRSK1

BRSK1

A gene on chromosome 19q13.4 that encodes a serine/threonine kinase required for the polarisation of forebrain neurons, which endows axons and dendrites with distinct properties, possibly by regulating phosphorylation of microtubule-associated proteins at specific regions. BRSK1 is thought to help regulate G2/M arrest in response to UV light-induced DNA damage; it phosphorylates WEE1, CDC25B and CDC25C. It is widely expressed, especially in the brain and testes; it localises to synaptic vesicles in neurons.
