Patient care

Historical data are collected regarding the exact cause and location of the injury. The possibility of an abusive injury is investigated if the history given does not seem consistent with the injury, or if the related details change. The bruised area is inspected, and the location, color, size, discomfort, and other pertinent characteristics are documented. The patient is assessed for other injuries dependent on the specific location and severity of the original injury. Related skin abrasions are cleansed thoroughly. Neurological status (AVPU) is monitored hourly or as needed for any patient with a suspected head injury.
