aortic body

an area of nervous tissue in the wall of the AORTA, close to the heart, which is sensitive to small changes in blood CO2 levels. A rise in partial pressure of CO2 triggers nerve impulses from the aortic body to cardiac/respiratory centres in the hindbrain via afferent nerve fibres (see BREATHING). A drop in CO2 pressure causes inactivation of the aortic body (an example of a negative FEEDBACK MECHANISM).
