dietary thermogenesisThe heat-producing response to ingesting food. For several hours after eating, the metabolic rate increases. Heat is a by-product of the digestion, absorption, and breakdown of consumed foods, and the synthesis and storage of proteins and fats. Because the calories used in the thermic response are expended, they are not stored as fat. See also: thermogenesis |
