Bródy, Sándor

Born July 23, 1863, in Eger; died Aug. 12, 1924, in Budapest. Hungarian writer; son of a merchant.

Bródy’s first collection of short stories, Poverty, came out in 1884. He was the editor of the literary journal Jövendö (1903-06). In his short stories, novels (Knight of the Sun, 1902; and others), and plays (The Nurse, 1902; The Schoolmistress, 1908) Bródy, a supporter of the principles of naturalism, exposed the greed and amorality of the bourgeoisie and landowners and affirmed the moral righteousness of the common people in an essentially realistic way.
