dog boning

A term of art referring to the expansion of an angioplasty balloon at the proximal and distal ends—likened to a dog bone—of a stent that has been positioned inside of a stenosed coronary, carotid or vertebral artery with atherosclerosis. Dog boning results in suboptimal expansion of the stent; the risk of its occurrence can be minimised by slow inflation of a properly positioned balloon and stent
