Bennett's comet Bennett's comet (ben -it) (1970 II) A long-period comet of inclination 90°, discovered by J.C. Bennett in Dec. 1969 from South Africa. Perihelion passage was on 20 Mar. 1971 and by mid-March 1971 the comet was a spectacular zero-magnitude object with a tail 11° long. The comet was observed by the Orbiting Geophysical Observatory and shown to be surrounded by a huge 9° by 6° hydrogen envelope. |
