Fazyl Iuldash-Ogly

Born 1872 in the kishlak (hamlet) of Loika, in what is now Bulungurskii Raion, Samarkand Oblast; died there Mar. 17, 1955. Soviet Uzbek folk poet and narrator. Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Fazyl Iuldash-ogly was the son and pupil of the talented Bulungur folk narrator Iuldash-Shair. His repertoire included more than 40 dastans, ranging from the heroic (Alpamysh, Rustam-khon, the Kerogly cycle, and Yusuf and Akhmed) to the romantic (Shirin and Shakar and Zevarkhon), to folk variants of narrative poems (Durbek’s Yusuf and Zulaikha, Navoi’s Leyla and Mejnun and Farhad and Shirin, Medzhlisi’s Seipul-Malik, and Ferdowsi’s Rustem, Son of Zal). Fazyl Iuldash-ogly composed dastans on contemporary themes, such as the popular revolt of 1916 (The Dzhizak Uprising) and the war with the Basmachi (Achildev). He also wrote numerous songs about Lenin, the Great October Socialist Revolution, and the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45.

Fazyl Iuldash-ogly was awarded the Order of Lenin.
