a genus of annual or perennial herbaceous plants of the family Cyperaceae. The inflorescence is an umbel consisting of rather small spikelets. The flowers are bisexual and lack a perianth. There are two or three stigmata, and the style is thickened at the base. There are more than 200 species, distributed in the tropics, the subtropics, and, less commonly, the temperate zones. The USSR has about ten species, growing in the Caucasus, Middle Asia, and the southern Far East. The plants grow on moist silty and sandy shores and in rice fields as weeds.
