Established: Established on June 28, 1954.
Location:In Watrous, New Mexico, 8 miles north of I-25 at the end of NM 161.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Self-guided tour, living history talks and demonstrations.
Special Features:Fort Union was established in 1851 as the guardian of the Santa FeTrail. During it's forty-year history, three different forts wereconstructed close together. The third Fort Union was the largest in theAmerican Southwest, and functioned as a military garrison, territorialarsenal, and military supply depot for the southwest. A large network of Santa Fe Trail ruts is still visible on the prairie.
