Fleming, Richard H.

Fleming, Richard H. (Howell)

(1909–89) oceanographer; born in Victoria, Canada. He came to the U.S.A. to teach and perform research at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (1931–46). He served the Hydrographic Office of the Navy (1946–50), then became a professor at the University of Washington (1950–80). He made major contributions to the physics and chemistry of oceans, and to naval applications of oceanography.
