Food groups (meat; milk/dairy; fruits and vegetables; cereals and grains) based on a series of nutritional guidelines promulgated in 1956 by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which was superseded in 1992 with the publication of the USDA’s Food Pyramid. Each of the four food groups was to represent one-quarter of the foods consumed per day, a recommendation which is no longer tenable.
