Arif Qazvini, Abulkasem
Born 1882, in Kazvin; died 1933, in Hamadan. Persian poet-democrat. Received a religious education.
Arif Qazvini was the creator of the genre of political tasnif (popular romance) and ghazal. Two hundred of his verses were collected in a divan (Berlin, 1924). He participated in the Revolution of 1905–11 in Iran and wrote and performed tasnifs with revolutionary content. In the 1920’s he gave concerts and worked on the newspaper Nahid. He later led a solitary life in Hamadan. Qazvini’s poetry combines elements of popular songs with traditional classical verse. The traditional models were newly interpreted in his political ghazals.
