Esmein, Jean-Paul-Hyppolyte-Emmanuel

 

Born Feb. 1, 1848, in Touvérac; died July 21, 1913, in Paris. French legal scholar; specialist in the history of law. Member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques (1904).

Esmein taught at the law faculty in Douai from 1875 to 1879; in 1879 he took up a position at the University of Paris. He belonged to the historical school of law. Esmein’s principal works are Elementary Course in the History of French Law (1892) and Fundamentals of French and Comparative Constitutional Law (1899).
