Budzhak Tatars

Budzhak Tatars

Nogais, a Turkic-speaking people who inhabited the steppes of Southeastern Bessarabia (Budzhak) in the 16th through 18th centuries, after these steppes were ceded to them in 1569 by the Turkish sultan Sulayman II. They received the name of Budzhak Tatars in the Ukraine and Podolia, which they repeatedly raided. When Budzhak was joined to Russia in 1791, the raids ceased.
