In south-central VA, north of Lynchburg. Established 1889; incorporated as a town in 1890, and as a city in 1892. Name Origin: The town was built on the site of an abandoned iron furnace, dubbed Buena Vista, because it supplied cannonballs used in the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War
