Barry, Marion S. (Shepilov) Jr.

(1936– ) mayor, public official; born in Itta Bena, Miss. He earned a B.A. from LeMoyne College and an M.A. from Fiske University. In 1968 he was co-founder and director of Pride Economic Enterprises. A member of the Washington, D.C., school board (1971–74) and city councillor (1974–78), he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1980. He was mayor of Washington, D.C., from 1980 to 1991, when he was convicted of cocaine use. In September 1992, upon his release from prison, he won a seat on the Washington City Council and was later re-elected mayor (1995).
