Barsakel’mes Preserve

 

located on Barsakal’mes Island in the Aral Sea (Kazakh SSR). It has an area of 18,500 ha and was created in 1939 to protect the desert complex and to reestablish the population of its typical animals, such as the Persian gazelle, saiga, and gerbil, valued for its fur. The onager has been reacclimated.
