Born May 23, 1790, in Conde; died May 8, 1842, in Versailles. French navigator and oceanographer.

During his circumnavigation of the globe on the ship L’Astrolabe from 1826 to 1828, Dumont d’Urville explored several groups of islands in the Pacific Ocean and charted parts of the shores of New Zealand and New Guinea. From 1837 to 1840 he led an expedition on L’Astrolabe and La Zeleé to Antarctica, where he discovered Louis Philippe Land, Joinville Island, and Adelié Land. A sea off the shore of Antarctica has been named after Dumont d’Urville.
