Dolj

a district in southern Rumania, in the southern part of the Getik plateau and the western edge of the lower Danube lowland. Area, 7,400 sq km. Population, 724,000 (1970). Its administrative center is Craiova. Industry is located mainly in Craiova and its environs. Machine building, the food industry, and the chemical industry are developed, as are the wood-products industry and clothing, textile, and leather enterprises. Crops are corn, wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets, and tobacco; there are vast vineyards. Cattle, pigs, and sheep are raised.
