hippocampal formation

An imprecisely defined structure in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, which is thought to play a central role in memory, spatial coding and in control of attention. In its narrowest definition, it includes the dentate gyrus, the hippocampus proper and the subiculum; some authors also include the presubiculum, parasubiculum and entorhinal cortex.
