a city; center of Buguruslan Raion, Orenburg Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Bol’shoi Kinel’ River of the Volga Basin at its confluence with the Mochegai River. Railroad station on the Kuibyshev-Ufa line. Population, 49,000 (1968).

Buguruslan is one of the centers of the petroleum and natural gas industry in the Volga-Ural petroleum and natural gas region. Petroleum was discovered on the city’s territory in 1936. It is an important point for the procurement, storage, and processing of agricultural produce. The city has furniture and garment factories, flour-milling and meat-packing combines, and radiator and reinforced-concrete plants. There are petroleum and agricultural technicums and aviation, medical, and pedagogical schools. Buguruslan also has a drama theater and a regional studies museum. The city arose in 1781 on the site of a small settlement.
