Central Berezina Plain

Central Berezina Plain

a plain in the central part of the Byelorussian SSR, in the basins of the Drut’, Berezina, Ptich’, Svisloch’, and Sluch’ rivers. Elevation, 150–180 m.

The Central Berezina is a rolling plain that gently slopes to the south in the direction of the Poles’e Lowland. The plain is composed of morainal loams, glaciofluvial sands, and loessial rocks. Soddy-podzolic soils predominate; peat soils and meadow soils are encountered in some places. Cultivated areas alternate with large tracts of pine and mixed forests. Oak and white beech forests grow in the southern part of the plain. Floodplain oak groves and floodplain meadows are found in the river valleys, and swamps occupy the lowland.
