Balsy, Eduardas

Born Dec. 20, 1919, in the city of Nikolaev. Soviet composer and public figure; People’s Artist of the Lithuanian SSR (1965).

In 1950, Balsy graduated from the conservatory in Kaunas (class of A. Račiunas), and in 1953 he completed graduate studies at the Leningrad Conservatory (class of V. V. Voloshinov). He wrote the ballet Ėglė, Queen of the Snakes (1960, Lithuanian Theater of Opera and Ballet, Vilnius), works for symphony orchestras, violin concertos, Dramatic Frescoes for violin, piano, and orchestra (1965), chamber music, songs and film scores. Since 1953, Balsy has taught composition at the Lithuanian Conservatory (since 1959 he has been head of a subdepartment). He became chairman of the board of the Union of Composers of Lithuania in 1962. He was a deputy to the sixth and seventh convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR. Balsy has been awarded the Badge of Honor.
