Fleurus

(flörüs`), town (1991 pop. 22,507), Hainaut prov., S Belgium. It is a coal-mining and manufacturing center; domestic appliances, furniture, and machinery are produced. At Fleurus, Mansfield and Christian of Brunswick defeated (1622) the Spanish in the Thirty Years War, the French under Marshal Luxembourg defeated (1690) the Dutch and their allies in the War of the Grand Alliance, and the French under Jourdan defeated the Austrians in a decisive battle (1794) of the French Revolutionary Wars.

On July 1, 1690, the French Army of Marshal F. Luxembourg defeated coalition forces, which included Spanish and Austrian troops, commanded by the Prince of Waldeck. On June 26, 1794, the French revolutionary troops of General J. Jourdan, comprising 75,000 men, defeated at Fleurus the 52,000 Austrian troops of Duke Friedrich Josias, prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. The French, making skillful use of the terrain, employed a deeply echeloned battle formation and, by means of counterattacks, repulsed the Austrians, who advanced in linear battle formations. The Austrians were forced out of Belgium. During the battle, aerial surveillance was used for the first time when the French sent a man up in a balloon to observe the enemy.
