Espejo, Antonio de
(äntō`nyō thā āspā`hō), fl. 1582–83, Spanish explorer. In 1582 he was sent out from San Bartolomé, Mexico, to rescue missionaries said to be menaced by the Pueblo people. He went down the Conchos River and then up the Rio Grande, exploring much of the present New Mexico and going far into the present Arizona before returning in 1583. He found traces of gold that led the Spanish to support the expedition under Juan de OñateOñate, Juan de, fl. 1595–1614, Spanish explorer in the American Southwest, possibly b. New Spain. In 1598 he led an expedition north from New Spain, took possession of New Mexico for the Spanish king, and established a settlement at San Juan.
