Bukharin Nikolai

(1888-1938) a leading member of the Bolshevik Party before and after the 1917 Russian Revolution. He wrote on IMPERIALISM and, while he had disagreements with Lenin, was regarded as one of the most brilliant young members of the leadership. He took a major role in the economic debates of the 1920s, eventually favouring the gradual road to socialism represented by the New Economic Policy introduced in 1921. He edited the daily party paper from 1917 to 1929, but when he opposed STALIN's forced industrialization programme he was removed from the editorship. He continued to be a leading member of the party, but was eventually expelled from it in 1937 and then executed during the period of the Moscow trials.
