Bukhtarma Hydroelectric Power Plant
Bukhtarma Hydroelectric Power Plant
the upper level of the Irtysh power grid; located in Vostochnyi Kazakhstan Oblast, Kazakh SSR, on the Irtysh River, below the mouth of the Bukhtarma River. The 67-meter head created by the dam extends into Lake Zaisan, raising its natural level. The established capacity of the power plant is 675 megawatts (mW) in nine units. The long-range annual generation of electric power is 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours.
The construction of the Bukhtarma Hydroelectric Power Plant began in 1953, the first unit was put into operation in 1960, and the plant was commissioned at full capacity in 1966. The component parts of the power plant are a right-bank concrete dam, with a maximum height of 80 m; a concrete channel dam, with a maximum height of 87 m and with one 18-meter-long surface spillway span; the 212-meter-long building of the power plant in front of the dam; and a four-lift single-lane lock located on the right bank. The 430-me-ter-long pumping installations of the power plant create the Bukhtarma Reservoir. The hydroelectric power generated by the plant is transmitted on high-voltage electric transmission lines at tensions of220 and 110 kW to the Unified Power System of East Kazakhstan.
