Atasi, Hashim Al-

Born 1876 in Horns; died there on Dec. 6, 1960. Syrian politician and statesman.

A lawyer by training, al-Atasi was one of the founders (1927) and leaders of the national bourgeois party Kutla Wataniya (National Bloc). During 1936–39, 1949–51, and 1954–55 he was president of the Republic of Syria.
