Lifshits, Evgenii Mikhailovich

Born Nov. 8 (21), 1915, in Kharkov. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966).

Lifshits graduated from the Kharkov (now Polytechnical) Institute of Mechanics and Machine Building in 1933. He worked at the Physicotechnical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kharkov from 1933 to 1938. Since 1939 he has been with the Institute of Physical Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He is also a deputy editor in chief of the Zhurnal eksperimental’noi i teoreticheskoi fiziki (since 1946).

Lifshits’ principal studies are on the theory of ferromagnetism (domain structure of ferromagnets, ferromagnetic resonance), the theory of intermolecular forces, and relativistic cosmology (stability of the expanding universe and the problem of singularities in the cosmological solutions of gravitational equations). Lifshits was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1954. He is coauthor of a fundamental course in theoretical physics (Lenin Prize, 1962). Lifshits has been awarded two orders and various medals.
