bulbospongiosus[¦bəl·bō‚spən·jē′ō·səs] (anatomy) A muscle encircling the bulb and adjacent proximal parts of the penis in the male, and encircling the orifice of the vagina and covering the lateral parts of the vestibular bulbs in the female. Also known as bulbocavernosus. bulbospongiosus
bulbospongiosus (bŭl″bō-spŏn″jē-ō′sŭs) One of the three voluntary muscles of the penis. It acts to empty the canal of the urethra after urination and to assist in erection of the corpus cavernosum urethrae. The anterior fibers contribute to penile erection by contracting to compress the deep dorsal vein of the penis. |
