Fomes Annosus

(Fomitopsis annosa), a basidiomycete and a facultative parasite, the most dangerous cause of root rot in the central part of roots and trunks of growing coniferous and deciduous trees. Wood attacked by this fungus at first turns violet; later white oval spots appear in it. In the final stage of rotting the wood becomes fibrous and cavernous. In pines and cedars, the rot enters the trunk to a height of 1 m; in less resinous varieties it may climb to 10 m or more. Fomes annosus spreads from infected or dead trees to healthy ones and forms nidi, causing great damage.
