Cluj University

(Babes̨-Bolyai Cluj University), one of Rumania’s major institutions of higher learning; located in the city of Cluj. Cluj University was founded in 1872 as a Hungarian (Magyar) university; it has been a Rumanian university since 1919. After the people’s power was established in Rumania in 1947, the university’s teaching system was reorganized. During the 1971–72 school year, Cluj University had nine faculties: mechanics and mathematics, physics, chemistry, (two faculties), biology and geography, philosophy and history, philology, law, and economic sciences. More than 14,000 students were studying at the university, under more than 800 teachers. Teaching is in Rumanian, Hungarian, and German. The university has archaeological, botanical, zoological, and mineralogical museums; the school library, established in 1872, contained approximately 2,500,000 volumes in 1972.
