Size: 1,011 acres.
Established: Established as Big Hole Battlefield National Monument on June 23, 1910; changed to Big Hole National Battlefield on May 17, 1963. In 1992, legislation incorporated Big Hole National Battlefield with Nez Perce National Historical Park, making it part of a unique park consisting of 38 different sites located in five states: Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
Location:10 miles west of Wisdom, Montana, on state highway 43.
Facilities:Picnic area, visitor center, museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Guided tours and campfire programs (summer), hiking, fishing.
Special Features:Park memorializes the Nez Perce Indians, the soldiers of the 7th U.S. Infantry, and the Bitterroot Volunteers who clashed at the Battle of the Big Hole in August of 1877 -- a dramatic episode in the long struggle to confine the Nez Perce and other Indians to reservations.
