(bul-ek'to-me) [ bulla + -ectomy] Surgical removal of a giant bulla from an emphysematous lung to allow the remaining normal lung tissue to expand and contract more effectively during respiration. It is used in selected circumstances as a treatment for severe chronic obstructive lung disease. Synonym: blebectomy
