a conurbation in Scotland along the lower course of the Clyde River. Population, 1,732,900 (1970), one-third of Scotland’s population. The main city is Glasgow; among the other cities are Paisley, Renfrew, Clydebank, Dumbarton, Port Glasgow, and Greenock. Clydeside is an important industrial region, famous for shipbuilding; machine building, metallurgy, and chemical industries are there. Clydeside’s economy is linked to its port.
