Evgenii Zhukov

Born Oct. 10 (23), 1907, in Warsaw. Soviet historian and member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (corresponding member, 1946; academician, 1958). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

In 1929 he began to teach at the Leningrad Oriental Institute and at Leningrad University. From 1943 to 1950 he was the director of the Pacific Ocean Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1946 he became a faculty head at the Academy of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the CPSU. From 1957 to 1971 he was academic secretary of the Division of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Since 1968 he has been the director of the Institute of World History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. A representative of the Soviet school of Japanese studies, he has worked on a number of the fundamental questions of Japanese history, especially of modern and contemporary times (the general characterization of the process of Japanese historical development, the history of Japanese militarism, and so forth). He has written works on international relations in modern times and the colonial question, on general methodological questions in history, and on problems of periodization. Among his most recent works is “Contemporary Historical Science and Leninism” in the collection Lenin and Contemporary Science (book 1, Moscow, 1970). Zhukov was editor in chief ofVsemirnaia istoriia from 1955 to 1965 and has been editor inchief of The Soviet Historical Encyclopedia since 1958. He has been awarded three orders and many medals.
