Evgraf Kovalevskii
Kovalevskii, Evgraf Petrovich
Born Dec. 10 (21), 1790, in Kharkov; died Mar. 18 (30), 1867, in St. Petersburg. Russian mining engineer and statesman. Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1856).
Kovalevskii graduated from the Military Mining School in St. Petersburg (1810). In the 1820’s he conducted the first major study of the geological structure of the Donbas and provided a forecast on the presence of rock salt deposits near the town of Bakhmut (now Artemovsk). From 1856 to 1861, Kovalevskii was the minister of public education.
