On eastern border of AZ; organized Feb 14, 1879 (prior to statehood) from Mohave County. Name Origin: For the Apache Indian tribe, of Athapascan linguistic stock, who inhabited the land for centuries. The name is variously said to mean 'man,' 'battles,' or 'enemy.'
