Domjanić, Dragutin

Born Sept. 12, 1875, in Kre; died June 7, 1933, in Zagreb. Croatian poet. A lawyer by education.

Domjanić began publishing in 1895, and his first book of poems appeared in 1909. His poetry is romantic and reveals the influence of the modernist movement. Written in the Kaj dialect, Domjanic’s verse expresses his love for his native land and his sympathy for the oppressed peasantry. The growth of the democratic movement in the country and World War I (1914-18) were reflected in his poems on social and antiwar themes. Domjanić translated the works of S. la. Nadson, L. N. Tolstoy, and M. Gorky.
