defaecation, defecation

defaecation, defecation

Voluntary or involuntary emptying of the RECTUM so as to relieve oneself of accumulated faeces. Stretching of the wall of the rectum causes a conscious desire to defaecate, but if this is prevented by voluntary decision the rectal wall relaxes and the desire fades until the next movement of faeces from the colon. Deliberate inhibition is a common cause of CONSTIPATION.
