default gateway

default gateway

The router used to forward all traffic that is not addressed to a station within the local network or local subnet. The default gateway's primary purpose in most homes and small offices is to direct Internet traffic from the local network to the cable or DSL modem, which connects to the Internet service provider (ISP), and vice versa.

Default IP of Default Gateway
The default IP address assigned by vendors of consumer routers is often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. See IP address, router and default IP.
