Bunger Oasis
oasis on the Antarctic coast, in the western portion of Wilkes Land, between 65°58’ and 66°20’ S lat. and 100°28’ and 101°20’E long. It is separated from the sea by a belt of shelf ice. Area, 450 sq km. The relief is low-mountain and hilly; there are many fresh and salt lakes (the deepest is Figurnoe Lake: length, 25 km; depth, to 137 m). The Soviet scientific station Oazis conducted research here from 1956 to 1959. The oasis was discovered in 1947 by the American pilot A. Bunger.
