Natuna, an Indonesian archipelago in the southern part of the South China Sea. Area, 1, 300 sq km. Major islands include Bunguran-Besar, Subi-Besar, and Laut. The islands are formed of granite, and their terrain is hilly. The highest point, in the central portion of Bunguran-Besar, is 959 m. The shoreline is edged with coral reefs. Climate, equatorial. Annual precipitation, more than 2, 000 mm. Evergreen tropical rain forests. Crops: coconuts, rice, and corn.
