Beck, Lewis Caleb Beck, Lewis Caleb(1798–1853) physician, scientist; born in Schenectady, N.Y. Licensed as a physician in 1818, he used his rural travels to collect natural observations. He taught scientific subjects at Rutgers (1830–31, 1838–53) and elsewhere, and wrote various works, including a Gazetteer of Illinois and Missouri (1823). |
