Don Carlos Mayor

Born Mar. 29, 1788, in Madrid; died Mar. 10, 1855, in Trieste. Leader of the Spanish Carlists, brother of King Ferdinand VII.

After the death of his brother, Don Carlos Mayor was a pretender to the Spanish throne under the name Charles V. He unleashed the First Carlist War (1833–40). Defeated in 1839, he fled to France. In 1854 (according to some authorities, 1845), he renounced his claims to the throne in favor of his son, Carlos Luis.
