Conta, Vasilf
Born Nov. 15, 1845, in Ghindǎoani; died Apr. 22, 1882, in Iaşi. Rumanian philosopher and statesman.
The son of a priest, Conta was educated in Belgium. He was appointed professor of law at the University of Iaşi and served as minister of education. Under the influence of Darwin’s theory of evolution he became an atheist. His theory of knowledge was based on materialist sensationalism, and in sociology he adhered to an organic theory of society influenced by A. Comte, H. Buckle, H. Taine, and H. Spencer. In politics he held views close to those of the nationalists.
