anastomotic doughnut

anastomotic doughnut

A term of art used for an annular piece of the GI tract that is taken beyond the margin of resection for cancer and analysed separately. Published colorectal cancer data suggest no role for the histological analysis of the anastomotic doughnuts following anterior resection. In contrast, doughnut involvement with cancer provides useful prognostic information post-oesophagogastrectomy, and thus histological examination of upper gastrointestinal doughnuts is justified. Doughnut involvement might justify the use of adjuvant therapy.
