Contenau, Georges

Born Apr. 9, 1877, in Laon; died Mar. 22, 1964, in Paris. French archaeologist; specialist in the archaeology of Southwest Asia and the history of the region’s ancient art.

Contenau was a professor at the University of Brussels from 1932 to 1947; he was also chief curator of eastern antiquities at the Louvre from 1937 to 1946. He headed a number of archaeological expeditions in Iran and Lebanon. Between 1946 and 1957, Contenau served as director general of the French archaeological mission in Iran.
