Forehearth
forehearth[′fȯr‚härth] (metallurgy) A bay in front of the hearth of a furnace. A receptacle in front of a hearth to receive the molten products. Forehearth a crucible in the lower front part of a cupola, where molten superheated pig iron flowing from the hearth accumulates; when necessary, the pig iron is tapped through a taphole into the ladle. In the casting of large parts, the forehearth ensures even composition of the metal. |
